market update

The market is pleased to welcome Ben Hassenger from Haslett for a musical performance on Saturday August 23 from 10-12! Check out his MySpace.

As you may have guessed almost everything is in season now- so it’s time to think of canning and saving for the winter! Most of the time farmers do not have the prices for bulk amounts posted- but don’t be afraid to ask for bulk pricing. You can often make orders for them to fill for next week and it’s usually much cheaper if you buy items in bulk…

Don’t forget to ask a farmer if you’re having trouble figuring out how to store these items!

In Season Goodies

There are many things that are coming into season. Soon it will be peak cherry season, if it isn’t already! Plus other fruit like strawberries are still doing well.

You could also get things for your 4th of July salad mix. Plus we have tons of garlic scapes at the market- which are great grilled as a local substitute for the dried garlic that will come in a month of so.

Have a great 4th of July!

Strawberries

Strawberries are almost in season in Michigan and you will probably find a few this Saturday! Here’s a recipe to get you started for the new crop!

For the adults:

Strawberries in Red Wine

For each serving, spoon into large wine glass:

3/4 cup quartered fresh Michigan strawberries
1-1/2 tsp. Michigan sugar
1 tsp. orange-flavored liqueur
1/2 tsp. Cognac

Fill each glass with your favorite Michigan red wine to cover the berries. Refrigerate for at least 2 hours before serving.

For the kids:

Strawberry Bread

2 cups fresh Michigan strawberries
3 cups Michigan flour
2 cups Michigan sugar
1 tbl. ground cinnamon
1 tsp. salt
1 tsp. baking soda
1-1/4 cups vegetable oil
4 eggs, beaten
1-1/4 cups chopped pecans

Preheat oven to 350°. Butter and flour two 9 x 5 inch loaf pans. Slice strawberries and place in medium-sized bowl. Sprinkle lightly with sugar, and set aside while preparing bread mixture.

Combine flour, sugar, cinnamon, salt and baking soda in large bowl; mix well. Blend oil and eggs into strawberries. Add strawberry mixture to flour mixture, blending until dry ingredients are just moistened. Stir in pecans. Divide batter into pans. Bake for 45 to 50 minutes, or until tester inserted comes out clean. Let cool in pans on wire rack for 10 minutes. Turn loaves out, and cool completely.

Memorial Day Goodies

We hope you find your way to the market and stock up on your Memorial Day necessities. For those looking for aesthetics, there’s sure to be plenty of hanging baskets and planters to spruce up your landscape.

For the grilling fiends out there, there is sure to be some delicious Great Lakes, fresh caught fish and an assortment of other meats from our vendors.

Don’t forget about the range of salad mixes, herbs, dried peppers, asparagus, apples and other mouth-watering edibles that can whipped up into a fantastic feast!

We also have recipes at the Market Manager’s Table, if you’re unsure of what to make for your celebration!

Spring Market Goodies

Now is the time to stock up on those early greens like spinach, lettuce, collards and much more! There was also some asparagus at the market last week, and some farmers had apples and root crops which they have stored through the winter for you to enjoy.

Don’t forget that the “Early Market” features different vendors from that of the normal market, so if you come in looking for your favorite vendors and can’t find them, they probably aren’t ready to come to market just yet. But please take advantage of all of the other great things and buy from the farmers who come in on those cold mornings!

Hope to see you at the market!!!

We’ll Miss You

The Meridian Township Farmers Market lost a founding member and long-time vendor of the market this week.  Howard Stone, known best for his chickens and fresh eggs, has passed away.

As you pass his booth tomorrow, there will a place for flowers and cards. Please observe a moment of silence as you pass in remembrance of Mr. Stone- a centerpiece in the market for so long. We’ll miss you.

Market is Almost Here

Happy Earth Week, because it deserves more than a day…

Just a reminder that the Meridian Twp. Market is almost here… Saturday MAY 3, 8am-2pm.

We usually feature a wide variety of spring favorites- sweet greens, plants and flowers are always preferred. Where else can you find organic transplants? Or the sweetest Kale or herbs you’ve ever had? And as always our vendors can provide great advice on care of your own little slice of garden heaven.

And for the vendors- don’t forget to send your pics to titusreb at msu dot edu- so we can feature you in the vendors section.
